When Xavier was born, his mum, Kelly sensed that something wasn’t right.
Despite her concerns being repeatedly dismissed as ‘just a phase’, Kelly chose to trust her instincts and continued to push.
In November 2023, at just two and a half years old, Xavier was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that causes painful ulcers to the inner lining of the large intestines.
In the weeks that followed, Xavier was in and out of hospital. So much so that their admissions blurred together, their worries and anxieties grew and by Christmas Eve, Kelly and her family were exhausted – physically, mentally and emotionally.
With ongoing appointments, emergency admissions and unfamiliar faces giving endless pokes and prods, Kelly watched helplessly as her baby boy endured pain and discomfort, all before he could even understand what was happening, and there was nothing she could do to take away his pain.
During the Christmas holidays, in the midst of all the stress and uncertainty, the Clown Doctors came to visit and gave Kelly a gift of something she was not expecting…
Xavier’s giggle.
A sound she hadn’t heard in weeks.
Kelly and her family had no idea just how desperately they needed this moment.
“They didn’t just entertain,” Kelly says “they brought a sense of normalcy, joy and connection when we were completely worn down.”
That’s what made the Clown Doctors’ presence so powerful.
Their calm and playful energy cut through the heaviness of the moment. They didn’t rush. They didn’t overwhelm. They simply met Xavier where he was – with silly noises, gentle humour, and a red nose he refused to part with for days.
"One of the most remarkable things about the Clown Doctors is their uncanny ability to show up just when you need them most - on the days when worry feels overwhelming and a smile feels impossible."
When the Clown Doctors visit, Xavier is more engaged, more willing to interact and less consumed by fear.
Over time, those moments have added up.
Xavier doesn’t associate hospitals with pain anymore – it can even be a place where something good might happen.
Today, Xavier continues his treatment while embracing new milestones, including starting school – a big step that brings both exhaustion and pride.
"If I had one wish for Xavier," Kelly says, "it would be for him to always find moments of happiness, no matter what challenges he faces. The Clown Doctors have played a huge role in giving him that – and I hope they can continue bringing laughter to other children who need it just as much."
